Cardio burns fat?
Unfortunately it’s not as simple as that and you could be forgiven for thinking that’s the case and it’s the basis premise that many people mistakenly believe will give them the best results.
In actual fact, weight training is an important part of any kind of fat loss or fitness programme. Firstly, weight training itself can burn more than 400 calories per hour and also increases your resting metabolic rate, which is basically the number of calories you burn even when you’re sat on your backside doing sweet nothing!
By lifting weights you’ll burn calories even in the period when you’ve stopped exercising.
If you’re on a healthy eating plan to lose weight any weight loss will mean you lose muscle as well as fat. However, if you’re lifting weights a greater proportion of your weight loss will come from fat as the weights will help you to increase your muscle mass.
Weight training also has the added benefit of making you stronger and this will, in turn, improve your cardio anyway.
So, what are you waiting for, get out there and do some pumping!
Best wishes Garth
