What does the “endorphin high” mean to you?

So there it was, another forty five minutes of blood, sweat and tears over.

I was showered, changed and sitting at the juice bar of my local gym sipping on my protein smoothie and feeling my depleted glycogen stores being filled up again as that delicious brew worked it’s magic and enjoying what I affectionately call “Endorphined” !

This is that glorious feeling (for me at least) when you have just finished a fabulous workout, pushing yourself hard and feeling the buzz of hot blood coursing through your veins.

This is the moment when all is well in your world, that immeasurable feeling of well being and calm and accomplishment, which stays with you for hours afterwards.

That moment when you have “Clarity of Thought” and stress just seems to be an alien concept and has no place in your world or lifestyle.

This is my “special place” the place I discovered many years ago during my years working as a Director within one of London’s largest advertising agencies.

It was in this place of personal well-being that all my best decisions were made, it was here that I was always calm, always strong and the benefits carried on far beyond the realm of the “mortal world” enhancing every aspect of my life and spirit.

So, as I sat there “endorphined”  I couldn’t help but notice the other gym members who had been working out at the same time as me and I got to wondering what it was that they actually got from their workouts and how it influenced their lifestyles, confidence and well-being?

There in the corner were the two women who had sat on their exercise cycles for a full one hour period “nattering” away to each other and commenting on the articles they reading in the magazines in front of them as they “exercised”.

Did they feel as I felt?

There was the guy in the blue T-shirt who had spent his entire workout not speaking to anyone.  Hitting set after set rep after rep pausing only to change the weights or have a drink of water totally focussed at all times.

Did he feel as I did?

The four young men laughing and joking all the way through their workout, continuously working only upper arms and surreptitiously checking themselves out in the mirror after every set.

Did they feel as I did?

The determined lady just leaving the gym, covered in the “glow of perspiration” who ran at intensifying paces on the treadmill, MP3 firmly attached to her left arm, baseball cap set just right and intermittently hydrating herself from a sports bottle, totally focussed.

Did she feel as I did?

This made me wonder, what reason do people workout for?

Is it because it makes them feel good and increases confidence?

Is it vanity?

Is it for medical or health reasons?

For weight management and weight loss?

Is it social?

Or is a combination of all the above?

So that makes me ask, why do you workout and what does it bring to you and your life?

Do you carry all your valuables in one place?

As a youngster I’m betting you’re Mum and Dad probably told you a million times about carrying all your valuables in your handbag or in one place.

I know it’s very difficult and probably a tad inconvenient not to carry everything in one place but it really does make sense to at least try and distribute valuables more evenly about your person.

It also never fails to amaze me how many of the ladies I see and meet in beautifully tailored and fitted suits and yet they don’t seem to have a single usable pocket which makes it even more difficult.

Do try to distribute your goods about you, remember, if your handbag gets snatched your entire life is literally in there.

Purse, credit cards, keys to your home, mobile telephone, which is then a “double whammy” because you’re now unable to make any calls and chances are you have no change because it’s all in your handbag as well.

Worse still, if you do keep everything in your handbag what’s to stop your assailant rushing straight around to your home because chances are that you’ll have something in there with your address (like a driving license) and ransacking your home as well. While they’re doing that they might even find your spare car keys go outside and keep pressing the key fob until a bleep goes off and taking that as well.

It might be difficult but do try and find a way not to carry everything in one place.

Finally, if you do find yourself confronted and there is no way out, simply hand over your bag immediately using strong body language and disengage from the situation, brushing forcefully past your assailant if necessary.

Goods can always be replaced, you can’t!

Destiny is not a matter of chance,

it is a matter of choice…

One of the most exciting things for me since my website was redesigned and relaunched eight weeks ago has been the fantastic response I’ve been getting to my blogs, posts and articles, it’s absolutely brilliant and everyone seems to really appreciate the content and are happy to add their own comments which is exactly what I wanted.

I so enjoy and love working with people and always have done and I’m never happier then when I’m in the thick of it, so to speak and helping others to make momentous changes in their lives.

Even when I was MD of a for the design studio at well known London ad agency I was always the one that people would come to advice for and I think the main reason for that is one that I always make sure I’m knowledgeable and totally immersed in what I do and two I can give information to people in a way that everyone understands and can relate to, I never ever try to baffle anyone with science, I just tell it like it is.

It was the same when I started to teach kickboxing commercially as the “acknowledged leader” because I wore the “honoured and coveted black belt” it was presumed and quite rightly so, that I had the answers but unlike a lot of so called experts I made sure I did have the answers and could always back them up!

I also think it’s incredibly important that if you are going to be a leader, that you lead from the front and that’s something I’ve never shirked away from, you have to lead by example.

Exact same plan when I was a private personal trainer, nutritionist and life coach I always wanted to be the very best I could be so that I was always my clients first port of call and even when I had a couple of “celebrity clients” (woo hoo) it never went to my head, because to my mind all my clients were celebrities and everyone was treated equally and believe me, when you work at that level not only do you have to know your onions you have to deliver results or you quickly lose any credibility.

Not only do you have to “talk the talk” you have to be able to “walk the walk”!

I still follow that maxim to this day and it’s wonderful that so many of you respond to my posts on Face book and twitter in such a positive and encouraging manner.

Empower yourself and surpass your dreams!

Some days are totally awe inspiring and everything just goes according to plan and then some!

Other days are just so so but can be enhanced with the correct mindset.

And some days, well you can just forget about and delete from your lifestyle.

Then there are other days, those special days that encompass everything from the above and then transcends them.

Those times in your life when the seeds that you have sown along the way start to take on a life of their own and it’s as though you can feel the ground begin to vibrate just a little as those seeds and ideas and plans start to take shape, maybe imperceptibly but shaping and growing nonetheless.

This is where excitement begins to grow and further fuels the desire thus empowering the dream!

Arnold Schwarzenegger once famously likened working out and the pump that follows akin to the joyous feeling of the union of man and woman (well not quite in those terms) but you know what I mean.

To finish off a powerful day which has had a powerful beginning, one has to have a powerful end and one which will also fuel, power and drive the dream to further dizzying heights.

To my mind the feeling of an endorphin filled body moving rhythmically like a piston against the resistance of weights feeling your muscles engorging with blood and hammering through your veins filling you with so much power and energy and focusing your mind with a laser like single mindedness is almost indescribable and the nearest thing akin to unbridled Nirvana!

I have found over the years that working out on a regular basis has been my “saving grace” the place where everything is ok and the world is a wonderful place to be!

Even in all my years in the corporate world of London advertising and the pressures that came with that turf, I found that the endorphin high that always followed an intense workout whether it was a through kickboxing session or a hard weights workout carried me through the day and I never ever felt pressure, it was as though the gym was a magical place where all my cares and woes simply got left behind.

Working out has been the route to my personal power and I don’t just mean being fit and well. It has given me confidence, it has empowered me, it has taught me about myself and above all it has given me a mental edge that can never be gained in any other way shape or form as challenging yourself in the fire of your own will and surpassing yourself is an awesome feeling and enables you to push through many other barriers that your career or life may throw at you.

Through the discipline of exercise I now have a wonderful life and career.

Like I said, some days…
